Born in 1904, René Lacoste nicknamed "The Alligator" wins his first tournament at aged 17 and the French Open for the first time in 1924. In 1926 Lacoste adopts the short-sleeved shirt, inspired by polo players in London which allows greater freedom of movement, giving birth to the concept of functional elegance. By the 1940's Lacoste had expanded his range to include more colours, then in the 50's added children's wear and shoes.
